2024 - Base to Base

My Activity Tracking

1,389
kms

My target 1386 kms

Please support Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service - it assists many people on the coast and in regional NSW, along with inter hospital transfer.

I’ve registered to ride 1,386kms in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Base to Base Challenge – the distance between all four Westpac Rescue Helicopter Bases across NSW, to raise funds for this worthwhile charity. (Belmont – Tamworth – Lismore – Belmont return)

My cousin was very fortunate to receive urgent care near Woolbrook from neighbours, followed on by a Newcastle Westpac Rescue Helicopter in 1999. Since then a Westpac Rescue base has been established in Tamworth, greatly reducing the time it takes to get assistance to those who need it in surrounding regional areas – saving lives. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter provides urgent aeromedical assistance to over 1.5 million people. All funds raised on my mission this October will help keep the Rescue Helicopters ready to respond to those who need it most so please make a donation and support my Base to Base mission. I’ve got one full month to complete my cycle – all of my km’s will be on my mountain bike and on my bike trainer.

Thank you for your support.

Day 29: COMPLETED

Tuesday 29th Oct
Willow completed her cycling kilometres yesterday so she was very keen to ditch the bike for a car lift this morning to school. Hence after sitting at the desk for a while I decided to churn to my finish line for the Base to Base Challenge on the trainer. Feeling inspired I pushed my legs to sprint fast to gain a few green jerseys and PRs and also QOM for a little fast climb. The ride I chose 'Canopies and Coastlines' and seemed appropriate in feel for all the km's I have done this month through parks and along the coastline in Newcastle. Over and out from me, for another year!

Thank you once again to everyone who has contributed to WRHS through this page. And if you feel inspired, please link up next year in either contribution or participating. It is rewarding for all involved.

Day 28: 51.45km

Tuesday 29th Oct
Today I had set out to just pedal outdoors... extended morning school ride in with Willow was fabulous. The afternoon shades grew darker and on checking the satellite the clouds looked to hit right on school collect time - luckily the storm action happened faster than expected so I managed to pedal sprint the short route to meet Willow and by the time we turned around the sky was filled with an array of mixed beautiful shades and patterns. (and no downpours above us pedalling away - just in the distance out over the ocean and further north) To make up for my lack of km's I then jumped on the indoor trainer before my motivation faded to pedal out a quick 13km 'Volcano Flat in Watopia' over 24mins.

Day 27: 51.78km

Tuesday 29th Oct
Another outdoors all in one ride much the same as last night.... I am revving up to complete my km's soon. Two more days of pedal power to go.

Day 26: 55.33km

Tuesday 29th Oct
An outdoors all in one pedal for Saturday evening. I started my ride at 5.38pm and came back to base 2hr 26mins later. Jesmond Park loop de loops Broadmeadow - Islington Park - Throsby Creek - Foreshore - Newcastle Beach and Skate Park turnaround to do it all again.... beautiful weather and sunset hues. Clearly a soft ride with average moving speed of 23.4km/h and avg heart rate 142 bpm. I did churn a little bit at times as the heart was up to 168 bpm for a few sections with resting at 66 bpm.

Day 25: 55.25km

Tuesday 29th Oct
Friday outdoors riding - Extended pedalling to school and back covered all of my km's today.

Heart rate of 55 - 157 bpm (the first hr seems pretty low for me - maybe I had a fabulous 15min catnap after early lunch or the watch was not recording quite right!)  and my body battery drained! I am starting to look forward to some off bike days once I have completed my kilometres.

Day 24: 50.54km

Tuesday 29th Oct
Outside cycling today on my fabulous old steel frame Rocky Mountain hard tail. It has seen plenty of kilometres with me in many locations! For all the fancy new bikes I pass by, I still remain loyal to my first ever mountain bike and it remains consistent.

Extended morning into school pedal and then after drop off I continued on from Newcastle Beach around the foreshore and Islington Park/Broadmeadow to Jesmond Park roundabout and back along the various cycle paths and roads. An easy 21km on the way back and around. Obviously I was running a bit late for the afternoon school session, as I churned along Parkway Avenue and up Bar Beach Hill to meet Willow. We then did the extended ride home... perfect to make up my 50 or so km today!

Day 23: 50.31km

Tuesday 29th Oct
Today I opted for a trainer ride to fit in before school pickup time in the car today. So at 1.05pm I jumped on with iced coffee ice cream loaded and blitzed ready to pedal out 50km. I chose Zwift - The Big Ring in Watopia...reasonably flat and doable within the time frame. 1hr and 36mins later into the car for school collect. Satisfied to have covered the km's though and legs feeling pretty tired after the past few days km's.

Day 22: 78.85

Tuesday 29th Oct
A combination of pedal power today - Tuesdays are always good cycling out days being quieter on the roads and cycleways! I cycled the extended morning school drop off with Willow and then jumped straight on the trainer afterwards for a 17.5km group ride (Whole Lotta Lava in Watopia) followed by another short one titles 'Temple Trek in Watopia'. Later on when the sun was going down and after dark, Willow and I rode out to Jesmond Park and the foreshore loop de loop to Newcastle Beach Skate Park and back around for about 28km. It was a beautiful evening and I took some action footage of Willow at the time to add into her video which she will post before the end of the month.

Day 21: 65.15km

Sunday 27th Oct
It was my sisters b'day today so I took her out for breakfast...it must have been the good toastie that I ate as I got back to the desk for some hours with work and then at 4.00pm jumped on the trainer to churn out 65.15km with ZWIFT - Spiral into the Volcano in Watopia. 386m gain and 2hrs later.

Day 20: 32.51km

Saturday 26th Oct
A ZWIFT ride for Sunday mid afternoon. Only 32.51km on a track named Navig8 in Watopia. A minimal 131m gain and 60mins pedalling away...

Day 19: 52.76km

Saturday 26th Oct
A dusk evening ride was on the agenda for Saturday Day 19. Initially through to Jesmond and then back via Islington and the foreshore to Nobby's. Then some loop de loops along the foreshore zone and out Industrial Drive a little. There was a dance party in progress and while I was loving the pumpy music I did not appreciate the extra bodies floating around in various states. Wildlife entered my head at the time as I had ten sets of eyes on alert for people popping out from behind cars or on the pavement. I do at least have good bike lights but the calmer vibe further along Industrial Drive allowed me to pedal o a little over 52km for the evening.

Day 18: 55.86km

Saturday 26th Oct
A combination day of outdoor and indoor - the indoor came about as I managed to have a dead flat tyre on the way back from riding to school with Willow...hence a frustrating push the bike home for more than a few kilometres. I jumped on the trainer to try and cover the kilometres and more with the time I had lost. The indoor trainer is more efficient in time for kilometres due to it being a road bike (plus controlled no wind conditions) rather than my mountain bike outdoors. I do like riding my mountain bike on the bike paths and road though as I do not get flats or have any issues with it and can jump gutters and dodge pedestrians and cars easily compared to if I was on a faster road bike outdoors. Probably slightly more comfortable too - even if a hard tail.
In the afternoon we extended our back from school ride out via Islington and through to Jesmond Park via the various sporting fields, cycle paths and parks along the way. A nice way to cover the kilometres.

Day 17: 33.32km

Saturday 26th Oct
I had a day trip to Sydney and decided to take the bike so I could do some rounds at an old haunt - Centennial Park - which I always love. It is like home away from home for me in some ways - very familiar territory and I appreciate the green space there. I had a little bit of time from about 12.30pm which is never ideal for me on a hungry stomach! However I pedalled into the wind one way and zipped down the eastern side and around doing loop de loops. A few serious looking guys cruising by me on their smart looking road bikes and kit and luckily to keep me entertained I managed to cruise by some other riders who were on the casual side enjoying the day. After riding, I changed back into my other clothes and continued on with the day. By the time I arrived back to Newcastle I decided not to pedal out in the evening though. At least I had ticked off 30 or so km.

Day 16: 74.3km

Saturday 26th Oct
A big day of morning outdoors pedalling with an extended school run loop along the foreshore and Newcastle Beach, then back through to Jesmond Park where all the roadworks are happening at the big roundabout. On arriving home I felt motivated while warmed up to jump on the indoor trainer and ZWIFT to the route of Douce France in France for just over 30km.  Later the outdoor afternoon school run, pedalling in via Bar Beach and back. The kilometres today will help make up a few of the kilometres missed while in Wagga Wagga.

Day 15: 65.32km

Saturday 26th Oct
Another indoor trainer day. A Pacer Group Ride, The Big Ring in Watopia and later on in the afternoon R.G.V in France which for 34km and only 153m gain is kind on my legs. Looking forward to some outdoor pedalling when the sun is out and the winds calm down.

Day 14: 35.31

Saturday 26th Oct
Indoor trainer pedalling today on a range of ZWIFT tracks. School is back in to Term 4, so my motivation to cover more kilometres will rise this week.

Day 11, 12, 13: 0km

Saturday 26th Oct
Willow had her NSW mountain bike champs down in Wagga Wagga, so I elected to take my computer for some work time in-between her races, instead of my bike. As it turned out the facilities there were pretty good, with a range of tracks and trails within the cycling complex, plus some longer bike paths around the entire city. Three days off and 150km to catch up in the next week or two...

Day 10: 57.4km

Saturday 26th Oct
Two rides today on my mountain bike - one around the foreshore, Newcastle Beach and Bar Beach. The afternoon ride I extended out to New Lambton/Lambton along with the beaches and foreshore/Islington Park loop.

Day 9: 63.9km

Wednesday 9th Oct
THANK YOU to the generous donations that came in today - inspirational! I was very happy to see these.

Another ZWIFT trainer ride day today... hopefully I can arise earlier tomorrow morning to lack of wind and rain with a ride out to enjoy the ocean air.

Two rides today back to back in the afternoon included 20.5km with 'Tempus Fugit in Watopia' followed by 43.4km with 'Coast Crusher in Watopia' - plenty of short sprints to test out my legs in reducing my times on each, which was quite fun. Always nice to gain the green jerseys in this online trainer world, though my ideal jersey on ZWIFT is definitely the mountain goat - I won't be trying for that in the next few weeks as I am unsure I can back up each day with too many climbs.

My pedaling legs are in quite a nice rhythm now, though I definitely feel the general body tiredness (in a nice way) by the end of the day. Sitting at my desk editing images, feels like a luxury, instead of a churn!

Day 8: 50.33km

Tuesday 8th Oct
After a day trip to the Upper Hunter (Willow and I left Newcastle in the rain and arrived back to the light rain after having a dry day near Scone) I mustered the motivation to jump on the bike trainer at about 5pm and say hello to ZWIFT again. I found a ride titled 'Itza Party In Watopia' and feeling like I needed some party encouragement on I rode. 510m ascent and 50.33km later in just over 1.5hrs (faster than my mtn bike riding outside) I could tick the box. My legs appreciated the smooth handling on the trainer for a change, so maybe I will find some lost love for the trainer again this month when I need to fill a few gaps with the 50km per day schedule.

Day 6 and Day 7: 107.7km

Monday 7th Oct
I have been cycling solo for a few days - morning and evening sessions on the bike. Bar Beach Hill up to King Edward Park and zipping down to Newcastle Beach or the Foreshore seems to be my staple! The ocean air is always welcomed; though I tried to dodge the extra people floating around over the long weekend.

On Day 6 I decided to venture along Industrial Drive for an evening churn. I have never in my life of pedal power seen so many mini bugs - it was like snow through my night lights. Mouth jammed shut and eyes squinting all the way heading out. Thankfully with the breeze pushing me along on the way back, the bugs were also heading in the same direction and not flying into my face.

Day 7 morning and later evening rides were fabulous... a good loop around the beaches and foreshore extended out through Islington Park and past the Broadmeadow Westpac Rescue Helicopter Base on to Lambton and Jesmond Park. This evening I opted for Bar Beach Hill again (was late so most people had dispersed) and down to the foreshore road, looping between Nobbys roundabout and the fish market roundabout end.... perfect with the lack of traffic and not much wind. So nice to have completed all my km's to date outside on the roads and cyclepaths. I am saving the indoor trainer to wet weather days.

Day 5: 56km

Saturday 5th Oct
The wind woke me up in the earlier hours so I opted to not get up and cycle before the rest of the house stirred. Instead we all went out on one bigger ride late morning when the wind appeared to be diminishing in the direction of Caves Beach. Fabulous to see the linking section at the end of the Fernleigh Track Belmont all the way through to Swansea Bridge. It is amazing for walkers and cyclists etc. I highly recommend it. We enjoyed a lunch break at Caves Beach before heading back for the 28km. I was tempted to pedal out for one beach loop on such a beautifully still evening; but have decided it is possibly wiser to preserve my energy for a few morning loops to tick of 30km or so first up in the morning. I am now balancing out 50km exactly a day, on total 250km for Day 5! And THANK YOU so much to my first donation, from Lisa at Brainiacs Academy (aside from my own when I signed up) - that will spur me on tomorrow!

Day 4: 66.31km

Friday 4th Oct
Trying to catch up a bit on my per day kilometre ratio...will be putting in a few more kilometres over the long weekend I hope! Today was a good morning churn. Four morning loops via Bar Beach and Newcastle Beach/Foreshore area... first one early and solo, second with Willow so she could tick of her daily km's as well. My third/fourth loop solo to gain a few km's on my previous days efforts with a bit of addition in the middle around to New Lambton Park/Lambton Park. Perfect cycling weather to be outdoors again and hopefully my legs are past in shock mode to settle in for some heavier km days. I am enjoying being outdoors pedalling on my mountain bike rather than on the indoor trainer... the visual scope and ocean breeze is always kind.

Day 3: 32.42km

Friday 4th Oct
Two loops via Bar Beach and Newcastle Beach, Foreshore to Islington Park with Willow in the morning.

Day 2: 45.58km

Wednesday 2nd Oct
Another great weather day for cycling - morning ride to Redhead Beach and back along the Fernleigh Track. Afternoon/sunset pedal up Bar Beach hill and zipping along down through King Edward Park to Newcastle Beach and around the foreshore. Perfect Willow company on both rides which made it fun.

Day 1: 49.07km

Tuesday 1st Oct
What a picture perfect day to be out for the beginning of our Base to Base Challenge. Two rides for Willow and I - Fernleigh Track to Redhead Beach in the morning and a nice afternoon sunset pedal around and along the foreshore and break wall, before heading up and over the hill down to Bar Beach and back. I am nursing a cold that hit on the weekend/Monday, however the outdoors fresh air time seemed to suit it well. Hopefully tomorrow I feel less congested and Willow does not have tired legs after her km's covered today. It is so nice to have her company while cycling.
