Alpine Walking Adventure

By Grahame Price

I am off on another adventure!

This time I am walking the great alpine walk from Melbourne to Canberra, with a whopping total of 650 kilometers following ridges and high plains throughout some of the highest country in Australia all while raising vital funds and awareness for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

My Updates

Tabletop mountain

Monday 28th Oct
Currently near tabletop mountain north if Mt Jagungal, We are about a day and a half walk out from Kiandra and onto our last food stop.

Ready for a home cooked meal

Monday 28th Oct
It has been a real test of body and mind, climbing what seems to be every tall mountain, sleeping rough and drinking some stunning forests. 30 days into the walk and we are dreaming of a home cooked meal and a proper bed.

Update!

Thursday 17th Oct
Hi Everyone,

For those of you that have been following my adventure on Garmin, never fear, I am ok! I have had some issues with my Garmin but I can guarantee that I am safe in town and not stuck out in the wilderness!

The wilderness

Monday 14th Oct
As we entered the wilderness area, the landscape became steeper and more exposed, i didnt think it could get any steeper. The geology here alternates between mudstone conglomerate, shale, schists, sandstone and quartzite, all bent and twisted by volcanic action millions of years ago. The structures left behind such as the crosscut saw pictured.

Water

Monday 14th Oct
Access to water became an issue higher in the landscape but with some recent light rain some water had pooled in tyre ruts. We employed a 2 stage filter system, the first involving a coffee filter to take out the big bits and the second micro filter called a befree. I've tasted better.

The Challenge Begins!

Monday 30th Sep

It has been frantic but Dave and I are organised and ready for the challenge.

Starting the drive at 4:30am, I picked up Dave and we headed to Canberra airport. Next stop, a plane to Melbourne before train to Moe and finally Walhalla.

The hike starts Sunday - the weather forecast is pretty bleak but considering I started last time during an East Coast low how hard can it be.

Dave has already dropped off 3 of the food drops (I can't lose him because only he knows where they are hidden).

Thank you to all of our supporters so far. We are off!!

Walking Companion!

Friday 9th Aug
I am doing the walk with Dave Hanslow who is a veteran of bushwalking and canyoning and a very proficient navigator in remote locations.
Attached is a photo of Dave from one of the Blue Mountains canyons we did together last year!
